Based on a young adult fantasy series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, “Beautiful Creatures” opens as a teenage love story between Ethan Wate (Alden Ehrenreich) and Lena Duchannes (Alice Englert), the new girl in his fictional South Carolina town. Their budding romance is tested as Lena, who hails from a local clan of witches, awaits an earth-shattering judgment—her casting powers will be claimed for either the light or the darkness on her 16th birthday.
Colorful family members and other local “casters” clash over Lena’s fate, among them her seductive cousin Ridley (played by “Shameless” star Emmy Rossum). Costume Designer Jeffrey Kurland puts the actress in several eclectic looks, including this lacey, full-length black negligée that proves she does “bad witch” good.
“We decided ‘Ridley, that’s the person we can have fun with,’ that’s where we can have some fun and show some variance,” Kurland said in a recent interview with Trailer Addict. “She is able, as a siren, to seduce men and she can take on any form that a woman would take on. And with that [transformation], we gave her a new form—different hair, different colored hair every time, and her clothing—she’s very out there, and [Rossum] played it so well.”
Ridley’s incredible spectrum of looks—many inspired by Antebellum era fashions, as the Southern-set story shifts back and forth through the ages—hit screens this week.
