“Dark Shadows”

May 14, 2012

The costumes in “’Dark Shadows” by Costume Designer Colleen Atwood are not only a throwback to the early 1970’s – but also a nod to the 18th century – in homage to the original daytime goth soap opera the film is based on, which ran from 1966 to 1971. Atwood’s use of a dark green wool vampire cape as shown here on Johnny Depp’s character, Barnabas Collins, contrasts with the other quirky characters’ white-collared jumper dresses, macramé and metal jewelry, aviator sunglasses, bell-bottoms and leisure suits.

“The costumes for ‘Dark Shadows’ were a lot of fun to create. We were able, with license, to play the 1790’s against the 1970’s. An unusual challenge with two really fun periods.”
