“The Good Doctor”

At odds with its rosy title, “The Good Doctor” follows obsessive Martin Blake (Orlando Bloom), a young English doctor intent on keeping his lovely patient, Diane (Riley Keough), ill and dependent on his continued care at a Southern California hospital. Costume Designer Jill Newell used color and tailoring to capture Martin’s trajectory from a rookie hospital intern to a malpractice poster boy. “As a starting intern, we put Orlando in browns, for a sort of drab, ‘English-tweedy’ feel. As he gains experience, confidence and respect through keeping his patient sick and gaining a sense of power, we moved to cool blues,” Newell says. The designer kept Martin’s colleagues out of blue hues as the film nears its climax so that his bright blue scrubs pop on-screen. She also worked with the film’s cinematographer, Yaron Orbach, to select a pure white lab coat, tailored to Martin’s mushrooming sense of self-importance.
“Yaron was great and told me he wasn’t afraid of shooting white, so I worked up to a very crisp white lab coat,” she says. “In the beginning, the fit is a little big. In the end, as he’s grown confident, it’s a tighter fit.”
