Singer-actress Reba McEntire has a charisma that shines through everything she does. From music to television to fashion design (her RebaStyle line is available at Dillard’s), McEntire’s persona has an imprint on all of her professional ventures. When strategizing a wardrobe plan for her latest sitcom project, ABC’s “Malibu Country,” Costume Designers Terry Gordon and Liz Bass decided early on to give the star the spotlight and make her wardrobe a starting point for the rest of the cast.
The comedy follows Reba MacKenzie (McEntire), an aspiring singer-songwriter who—after she learns her country music star husband is cheating on her—uproots from Nashville and moves to Malibu with her kids and mother in tow. Gordon brainstorms with McEntire on her needs for each scene, presenting several options and often slipping in items from McEntire’s own fashion line. “[Reba is] very involved in every aspect of the costume design process,” Gordon says. “She’s not one to delegate and sit back and reap the benefits, but rather a sort of whirling dervish—an amazing businesswoman, entertainer, entrepreneur—she is very much a part of it.” After Gordon and McEntire map out her ensembles, Liz Bass works at designing looks for the rest of the cast and ensures their textures and palettes are balanced with McEntire’s.
Despite her character’s mixed role as a daughter, mother and woman scorned, the star’s vivacious, real life style persona shines through. A case in point: this sparkling Rebecca Taylor dress paired with heels from McEntire’s own line, worn in the Nov. 9 episode and one of Gordon’s favorite ensembles to date.
“It’s sexy, but with a very ‘Reba feel’ to it,” Gordon says. “Cowgirl sassy but contemporary and with a feminine edge.”
“Malibu Country” airs on ABC, Fridays at 8:30/7:30c.
