“Blood & Oil”
September 25, 2015
It’s like a dream team–a supermodel and an actor who has for decades been a men’s fashion icon.
In the new ABC series, “Blood & Oil” top model Amber Valletta is the trophy wife to Don Johnson’s oil baron. Johnson had men all over the world wearing pastel blazers with the sleeves shoved up the forearms during his stylish stint on “Miami Vice” in the 1980s.
Costume Designer Kathleen Detoro is again making Johnson a style-setter, even as he gets covered in mud and grime in the oil fields of North Dakota, where his character, billionaire Hap Briggs, aims to cash in on the oil boom.
“Where there’s oil, there’s money and fashion follows,” said Detoro. She’s been dressing Valletta in green–the color of money.
The model/actress appears in a three-quarter length, green strapless cocktail gown by Roland Mouret along with a vintage diamond and necklace and bracelet from Detoro’s personal collection.
“She looks beautiful in everything you put her in. She’s walked every runway show. She’s worn every designer. She can wear a bathing suit, a short dress, an evening gown–everything,” said Detoro. “She’s also the nicest person, which is the best part. And she knows fashion, so you can have a conversation and a great collaboration with her.”
After Costume Designer Amy Stofsky created the look for the pilot, Detoro picked up the series and the studio’s new directive.
“They wanted more fashion. The show has the rough tough realistic part with Carhartt and jeans. And there’s the other side–the mansion, the billionaire and the private jet. They wanted to see more of that part of the world.
The show shoots on location in Utah, which hasn’t deterred Detoro from shipping in fresh-off-the-runway looks from Paris and New York designers who sometimes offer them on loan. Johnson wears the best of the best: Ralph Lauren Purple Label, Loro Piana, Brunello Cuccinelli and Louis Vuitton.
As Darla Briggs, Valletta dresses to kill. “She’s not a stay-at-home wife; she’s a business partner with him, so there is a reason for her to dress up for dinners and meetings — or so the storyline tells me,” Detoro said. Valletta wears Jason Wu, Stella McCartney (note the new wide-leg silhouette) and silky trench coats from Burberry Prorsum.
Valletta also wears a number of pieces from Mary-Kate and Ashely Olsen’s collection, The Row, which have been surprisingly effective. “Who knew the Olsen twins would make such great clothes? We’re also using a lot of Victoria Beckham dresses. And who knew Posh Spice would make such fabulous dresses? I put Amber in a pencil skirt and it’s probably the best-fitting pencil skirt I’ve ever seen. Amber says the same thing–and she’s worn everything.”
“Blood and Oil” airs Sundays on ABC at 9 p.m.
