In NBC’s dark contemporary drama Game of Silence (Based on the Turkish series Suskunlar), Costume Designer Laura Goldsmith aimed to juxtapose the polished world of lawyer Jackson Brooks (played by David Lyon) with the gritty world he left behind. Creating a credible reality was vital to Goldsmith so she costumed Lyons and his partner Marina (Claire van der Boom), in trim suits, slender silhouettes, and strong colors which stand in contrast to the more rugged and approachable looks worn by his childhood friends, Gil Harris (Michael Raymond-James), Shawn Polk (Larenz Tate), and Boots (Derek Phillips).

One challenge Goldsmith faced came in the form of flashbacks to the 1980s, when the characters were children. Goldsmith notes that the child actors were growing quickly and that factor had to be carefully considered. To create the time period without relying on distracting clichés, she allowed the locale—suburban, rural Texas—to inform her choices of old comfort classics, which she feels create a “reminiscent feeling.”

Guest star Sharon Lawrence, who plays CEO Diana Stockman, provided visual drama. Goldsmith attempted to personify her sense of evil in costume choices which included a white pencil dress with a matching hat and sunglasses, as well as a blood red dress with a built in capelet.

You can find Game of Silence Thursdays on NBC at 10/9 c pm.
