Naomi Watts to Receive the 2014 LACOSTE Spotlight Award
Two-time Academy Award®-nominated actress Naomi Watts will receive the LACOSTE Spotlight Award at the 17th Costume Designers Guild Awards on February 17, 2015 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Whether on playing fields or in everyday life, LACOSTE’s story is rooted in a quest for authenticity, performance and elegance. Each Crocodile-branded product is designed to allow men and women to feel free in their mind and body, with clothes and accessories that enable confidence and ease by adapting to an ever-changing life. It’s this vision of optimism and courage that is promoted by the brand message: “Life is a Beautiful Sport.” In keeping true to that philosophy, the LACOSTE Spotlight Award honors an actor whose talent and career personify an enduring commitment to excellence, including a special awareness of the role and importance of costume design.
This year, LACOSTE is proud to present the LACOSTE Spotlight Award to two-time Academy Award®-nominated actress Naomi Watts. Born in England, Watts moved to Australia with her mother and brother at the age of 14 and began studying acting. David Lynch’s critically acclaimed film “Mulholland Drive” threw Watts into the spotlight, for which she earned Best Actress Awards from a number of critics’ organizations, including the National Board of Review and National Society of Film Critics. In 2003, she starred alongside Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “21 Grams” for which she received her first Oscar nomination. The same year, Watts was chosen to play ‘Ann Darrow’ in director Peter Jackson’s “King Kong.”
Most recently, Watts starred in “St. Vincent” with Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy, as well as Alejandro González Iñárritu’s “Birdman” with Emma Stone and Michael Keaton. Both films have received rave reviews and multiple award nominations.
Watts’ upcoming films include “Demolition” with Jake Gyllenhaal as well as “Insurgent,” the next installment of the successful “Divergent” franchise based on the popular, best-selling novels written by Veronica Roth. She has also filmed Gus Van Sant’s “Sea Of Trees” starring opposite Matthew McConaughey.
For the third year, LACOSTE has partnered with the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) and their costume design students on creative collaborations. This year, 9 students were asked to select an iconic film/character from a different decade (from the 1920s to the present), research their selection and sketch and design a polo shirt based on the character and era. LACOSTE provided each student with its famous brandedpolo shirts, as well as piqué fabric, trims, and crocodile logos. Using the provided materials, they will sketch, design and construct their character’s polo shirt. The shirts and their accompanying sketches will be displayed at the 17th Costume Designers Guild Awards as well as at the LACOSTE Symposium on February 18th. The FIDM students will attend the Awards Gala as guests of LACOSTE.
With the support of presenting sponsor LACOSTE, the red carpet, black-tie awards gala celebrates outstanding Costume Design in film, television and commercials. The CDGA has become a marquee event of the Hollywood awards season, notable for its lively, fun, warm and engaging celebration of Costume Designers and their essential contribution to film and television. The awards presentation will honor the work of Costume Designers in seven categories, including contemporary, period and fantasy film.
