Molly Maginnis, Costume Designer for the NBC hit series, “Smash,” discussed iconic Marilyn Monroe as an unwavering force behind her designs, as well as achieving character development through costume.

Among Maginnis’ favorite “Smash” costumes on display are two original beaded dress designs in red and gold, respectively. “The red dress was inspired by Marilyn Monroe in “Some Like It Hot” and it was made from a beaded Italian lace,” she said. “I had the additional over-beading designed to emphasize her “wasp” waist and full bosom. The gold dress is more of a 60s [design with a] sliver of gold beading that also emphasized a curvy figure.”

A costume worn by actress Debra Messing is the most bohemian of the “Smash” display, with soft layers and vintage jewelry to suit Messing’s eclectic character, Julia Houston, while character Eileen Rand (actress Anjelica Huston’s) outfit is simple and elegant, representing a strong woman who commands attention and space. Maginnis said the long wool great coat on display was specially designed for character Derek Wills (actor Jack Davenport). “Since he is a Brit and his character is one who is very sure of his importance, I wanted a coat that would take space and precedence,” she said.

Among the diverse array of costumes presented, other exhibit standouts include the gray wide-legged, high waisted trousers, textured beige cardigan and rose-colored blouse worn by Nicole Kidman, who portrayed Spanish Civil War and World War II correspondent Martha Gellhorn in “Hemingway & Gellhorn;” the black rubber S&M suit worn by Dylan McDermott in “American Horror Story;” a bright yellow halter bathing suit and matching yellow and black striped A-line skirt with black buttons from the Starz series “Magic City;” a stiff red and gold embroidered Mandarin-style top worn by Peter Dinklage in HBO’s period fantasy “Game of Thrones;” and a classic ruby-red, shoulder-baring cocktail dress from ABC’s hit drama “Revenge.”

The 6th Annual Outstanding Art of Television Costume Design Exhibition is free to the public and now open through October 20, 2012 at the FIDM Museum & Galleries: 919 South Grand Avenue, Los Angeles, California 90015.
