Team Kaylie

There’s no shortage of real world examples to inspire the character Kaylie Konrad (Bryana Salaz) for Costume Designer Jessica Peel Scott on the Netflix project Team Kaylie. The story follows a wealthy teen celebrity sentenced to community service after crashing her car through the window of a store on Rodeo Drive. She becomes the leader of a wilderness club made up of inner city kids from Pico Middle School.

Scott looked to the Kardashians and Gigi Hadid as a springboard for her main character. In order to heighten the visual comedy of the outdoor scenes, Scott shunned outerwear and appropriate clothing choices. Instead she embraced the visual dichotomy of glamorous gear in nature. “That contradiction is what’s fun,” she chuckles. That meant playing with textures and styles to create a look that was both contemporary and highlighted the humor. Scott used bold touches like “a really great skirt or an amazing, expensive handbag. We also use tons of high heels and Bryana is always a trooper doing insane stunts in stilettos.”

To make the rest of the cast distinctive, Scott gives each character a signature look. Jackie (Symera Jackson) is the buttoned-up, smart girl but her garments required a surprising amount of custom work. “She wears a lot of cardigans and blouses which we had to make because you can’t find them anywhere. My cutter-fitter builds a lot of her pieces.” Ray Ray (Kai Calhoun) is a showy, fashion-oriented character on a budget. “We make him a little flashy in a believable way. He has blazers from the thrift store, or we use neckerchiefs for him because it’s something fun and colorful you can add on top of bright t-shirts.”

The show also lets Scott explore zany plot twists. When the lead character has to attend a red carpet event straight from the woods, her costume became the focus of the high jinks. “We took a bodice and completely covered it with leaves and made a skirt out of hanging ivy and then she flies in on a helicopter. It’s silly and upbeat, and that is what I really enjoy—the comedy.”
