The Fast & Furious Presents
Hobbs & Shaw

Set in lush, evocative locations like London and Samoa, Hobbs & Shaw was envisioned as an elevated way to move forward within the framework of the wildly popular Fast & Furious film franchise. With iconic characters established, many of the film’s themes were rooted in the world from which they originated. Costume Designer Sarah Evelyn credits director David Leitch for his foresight. “He had a clear idea from the start that this was going to be within the Fast & Furious DNA, but that we were going to tease out the world of Hobbs & Shaw in an interesting, aspirational way visually. He chose to lean into the personalities in a way that embraced their background, then took things a step further.”

Shaw [Jason Statham] is London-born, so Evelyn elevated his suiting look through Savile Row tailoring, working with the firm Anderson and Sheppard. She juxtaposed this refinement against Hobbs’ [Dwayne Johnson] Americana, which she created using lines like Double RL. Brixton’s [Idris Elba] leather motorcycle suit was closer to a superhero costume and required extensive research and development to create the hand-worked leather garment built off a body cast. The quantity of multiples needed for all leads in their action sequences presented another layer of complexity.

For Evelyn, working with actors well-versed in their roles was part of what made the project so memorable. “Jason has an amazing eye, so I really had a partner with regards to the importance of the costumes for his character. Dwayne knew how textured his character needed to be. He would put something on and say, ‘Yeah, this feels like it,’ or ‘you know, maybe this needs to be worn in a little more.’ Also she shared an incredible collaborative spirit with the creative team. “I had a place to share ideas, which can be very vulnerable. There was an openness to the creative process and I felt really supported.”
