Overview

Mission Statement

Costume Designers Guild, IATSE Local 892 is a community of diverse storytellers and artists striving to be a reflection of the cultural landscape. We are committed to creating a more equitable workplace, industry and inclusive Guild. A unified community that seeks to create opportunities that support lasting economic success, equality, and access for our underserved and underrepresented members of every identity.

  • Discrimination is Unacceptable

It is important at all times that we confront bias within the industry and the damage it projects. We acknowledge the discrimination that black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people of every sex, gender, religion, ability, nationality, age, and economic status face within the entertainment industry.

  • Silence and Inaction Harms Us All

We are aware that silence and inaction harms all of our current and future members; so, we commit to speaking out and acting with care, love, and urgency.

  • A More Diverse Workforce with Greater Opportunity is a Vital Part of Progress

We recognize that BIPOC, along with the LGBTQIA+ community, women, and individuals with disabilities have been disproportionately excluded in the entertainment industry. We acknowledge their genius and talents, but also recognize the inequities they have faced in gaining access to opportunities of all genres and budgets. Our intention is to listen, learn, and commit to helping our Guild achieve long-lasting change for our current and future members.

What Are Our Goals?

  • Facilitate and participate in Guild efforts to pursue mandatory cultural competency trainings for our members
  • Develop mentorship programs for current and future members.
  • Facilitate and participate in Guild outreach to producers, agents, directors, studios, and others to achieve equity and greater opportunities, including leadership roles, for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ members.
  • Spotlight the work of currently underserved and underrepresented members.
  • Explore the expansion of co-design opportunities in order to promote cultural exchange, education and new relationships within our membership, using past positive experiences as a blueprint.
  • Create a diverse group within the Guild, dedicated to safety, support, fairness, and equality in the workplace.
  • Recruit and develop members for responsible roles within the Guild and participate in other Guild efforts to enhance and maintain a diverse leadership within our Guild.

The Guild is excited to now offer Affinity groups to our membership.

The purpose of these new Affinity Groups is to support groups of people from communities that have been systemically confronted with barriers of entry in the field of costumes or have been historically excluded, neglected, or under-prioritized in these workspaces. These can be spaces to share challenges, successes, joys, to listen, learn, reflect, problem solve, and build community.

The Costume Designers Guild believes that creating these affinity groups will foster more positive experiences for our members as well as give opportunities to members to reflect on their needs and bring them to the attention of the guild so that together, we can achieve meaningful change.

These spaces will be led by Guild members who identify with each group and are optional. If there is a group you would like to suggest please do so.
